Greg Giraldo dead? But I just saw him…

September 30, 2010

My wife emailed me news of Greg Giraldo’s passing this week, and it is one of those things that seems difficult to comprehend.  We saw him just two or three weeks ago an Goodnight’s comedy club in Raleigh, North Carolina.

We had been following “Last Comic Standing”  this past season and really connected with his personality as one of the three celebrity judges.   So, seeing him in person was quite a thing.  I even shook his hand and thanked him after the show.  I’ll remember that now more than ever, perhaps.

Hard to imagine someone, leaning against the brick wall on stage, microphone casually held in one hand, the other free to gesture emphatically as he made one point or another.   I can still see him in my mind, standing on one leg, with his other leg cocked, and his foot flat on the surface of the wall at knee height.  A classic pose.  A man comfortable in his domain.

The jokes about drugs and drinking, fast romances and frequent divorces  flowed easily and naturally, and while we heard the ring of truth,  we didn’t see perhaps what really was.  It’s just jokes, right?

I still can’t believe he’s gone.
