Power at last!

May 17, 2010

For the space of the last two years, my activities working on the new workshop have been constrained by 150 feet of extension cords strung out across the yard.  Enough to power a drill or other hand tool and possibly a  light to see by, but not much more.  At last, I finally have 125 amps of 220 volt power, coursing through 1/0 wire in 140 feet of 4″ conduit shown in the pics below.  The open areas were easy enough to dig, but the twisting journey through the woods was an added challenge…

Now, I can have full interior illumination, and enjoy the use of all those outlets that seemed to take eons to mount, run conduit, and pull wire to.   Of course, I still have more conduit and wiring to run to the lifts…

…and some heavy circuits for the welders and shop machinery including a solid state phase converter for some 3 phase powered devices like this industrial compressor.  15 HP 3 phase motors need lots of juice…

More weekends and another inspection or so before I can move in, but it’s getting closer and this was a nice milestone.  I’m finding it hard to believe I started this journey about ten years ago and this has all been something akin to a prologue.   The real work, and the more interesting stories are ahead.

3-phase… nice.   that screams “buy a bridgeport!”

are you going to run vaccum and airline conduit along the walls?

that air compressor looks like one of champ’s silent models.   ha!
