First snowfall of ’09

January 20, 2009

Snow began to fall in the early morning hours here and by around 7 a.m. the accumulation was about an inch – enough for a good showing, but not yet the blanket of sufficient depth to deter all.  By noon many businesses that had not already closed were doing so and around here, the depth was better than 3″ with forecasters now calling for a total of 4″ to 8″ by late this afternoon

I snapped this quick picture from the kitchen, overlooking the thin winter treeline and the empty fields beyond.

Another view, looking out past the heavy concrete archways to the snow obscured drive.

We receive a snow like this but once in several years here in the heart of North Carolina.   Growing up in the mountains, this was a common sight, and I could look forward to three or four good snows per season.   These were prime time for sledding, snow ball fights in the neighborhood, or rolling up a snowman.   The last significant snow we received here in the Raleigh area was probably 2001 or 2002 when over 16″ fell and closed schools and businesses for several days.

Still, this is but a light dusting to those who live up north and are used to shoveling and plowing their way through real snow.
