Labor Day Weekend – aptly named

September 6, 2006

With less than 1 month to finish our house and mucho trabajo remaining, we enlisted family and friends to help push things along.  My parents and I  (team Hopkins) tackled building the inside stairs, replete with spindle railings, while Leslie and her folks (team Ervin) took on the formidable task of running the miles of baseboard in the house.

Lending a hand, my good friend and neighbor Rick came over to install all our kitchen base cabinets so that they can be patterned for granite counter tops this week.  As a bonus challenge, we worked amongst the sheetrock sanders and painters, competing for space.

Rick and his wife Joann, hosted a big labor day cookout and invited all of us, along with members of their family and extended family.  Over hot dogs, hamburgers, and potatoe salad, everyone shared stories and unwound a little from  the three grueling days.

It was satisfying to see what we all had accompolished by late Monday evening. The food at Rick’s was so good. We even got to enjoy a wonderfully decorated birthday cake for two of the “senior men” that evening. Good memories, yes indeed.
